See full gallery on TechnoBuffaloAudiences will be introduced to a strange new character when Doctor Strange hits theaters in November. In a lot of ways, it’s Marvel’s biggest gamble yet as the studio goes from the drama of Captain America: Civil War to exploring sorcery, mysticism and alternate dimensions.
Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is the kind of character who, at least initially, doesn’t seem to fit in with heroes like Black Panther and Captain America. He isn’t your typical character—his ego only rivaled by that of Tony Stark’s—and that’s what makes him so exciting, according to director Scott Derrickson, who spoke to IGN about the upcoming film.
In the film, Dr. Stephen Strange, a successful neurosurgeon, is involved in a terrible accident that results in him losing the use of his hands. This sends him on a journey of faith and restoration, where he eventually meets the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). It’s then that Strange is exposed to a world beyond his imagination.
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige explained why Strange is such a compelling character.
“We’ve talked about in comparison to Tony Stark, who is an arrogant, witty fellow at the beginning of the movie who sells weapons, and then is an arrogant, witty fellow at the end of the movie who doesn’t sell weapons, who channels his wit and intelligence into something else but is kind of the same guy,” Feige said. “Strange’s transformation is much more complete than that.”
According to Feige, the art of Steve Ditko, who co-created Spider-Man with Stan Lee, served as a big inspiration for the Doctor Strange film. That means creating visuals for that have never been done before.
“For a lot of our interpretation of the multiverse and various dimensions come right out of all of the art of those early comics that Mr. Ditko did, and challenging our amazing visual effects vendors and visual effects supervisors—saying, ‘Let’s put this on the screen.’”
