It’s not just you. According to streaming blog Exstreamist, Netflix’s catalog is down by as much as 50 percent compared to 2012, when the streaming service supposedly was at its peak with “close to 11,000 movies and TV shows.”
Over the past few years, Netflix has put a priority on creating original content, committing billions of dollars per year to shows such as Stranger Things and Marvel’s Luke Cage. Because of this, Netflix is putting less money toward licensed content, which is likely why its library has fallen to around 5,300 titles this year, according to data from uNoG.
It’s a bit of a Catch-22 for Netflix and its subscribers. The streaming service has found tremendous success with its original content, with nearly 80 Emmy nominations to its name thanks to shows such as House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black. But Netflix’s reputation was built upon licensed content and to see its library shrink so drastically is worrying, especially if prices continue to rise.
Netflix is hoping to make its library a least 50 percent original content, which means its library of licensed titles could be even smaller by this time next year. That means another season of Stranger Things and the debut of Marvel’s The Defenders, which will bring Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist together in the same show.
If licensed content is what you’re after, you’ll have to start looking elsewhere.
