Big plot details for the next Wolverine movie have leaked

We got our first look at a poster this week and director James Mangold even gave fans a glimpse at page two of the movie’s script. Now, a report from The Wrap claims to reveal several big details about Logan’s plot, from the film’s setting to the current state of Professor X, again played by Patrick Stewart.

Note that there are possible spoilers ahead.

Logan will allegedly take place in the year 2024 when mutant births are on the decline. Seeing this as an opportunity, the government starts an operation called “Transigen,” which turns mutant children into weapons of war. It just so happens that the small child seen holding Logan’s hand in the post is a mutant, and Logan apparently serves as her protector. Of note: the girl apparently has two claws instead of three.

Even though Jackman’s Logan acts as her protector, he’s not exactly the man he once was. As Mangold revealed in the script, Logan is sick as a dog and his powers are fading to the point where he heals slowly or not at all. As a result, he self-medicates with alcohol, something he’s had a penchant for in the past.

The Wrap also says Patrick Stewart’s Professor X is in bad shape as well. His powers are apparently unstable and he often doesn’t even remember who Logan is. Mangold shared a photo of an older Professor X to his Twitter on Thursday, backing The Wrap’s report up.

Logan sounds much grimmer than any other X-Men movie we’ve seen, which fits well with the character (and it makes sense considering Logan is reportedly loosely based on the “Old Man Logan” comic storyline). With so many details now dropping, hopefully that means we’ll see the first trailer soon.

Logan is scheduled to hit theaters on March 3, 2017.
