Legendary Entertainment has a new name attached to the Detective Pikachu film it scored the rights to earlier this year. According to Deadline, the production company will be working with director Rob Letterman, most recently know for one of 2015’s surprising critical hits, Goosebumps.
Letterman’s directing resume extends to Shark Tale and, the better received of his two animated films, Monsters vs. Aliens. He will be directing a screenplay written by Nicole Perlman of Guardians of the Galaxy fame and Gravity Falls creator, Alex Hersch.
Pokémon is still in style five months later
Legendary acquired the rights to a Pokémon film back in July when Pokémon GO was stealing headlines left and right. Some thought that the deal was a little too quick to capitalize on a fad that would dry up within a few months.
However, numbers are showing that Pokémon GO’s success is carrying over into the main series. Pokémon Sun and Moon are now the fastest selling Nintendo games in North American history, and the series feels fresher than ever.
So, yeah. Legendary scored the Pokémon deal at just the right time it seems. Now, it needs to make a great movie out of it. Who knows? If the price tag is right, maybe Legendary can still get Danny Devito to play the role of Pikachu. Probably not.
