See full gallery on TechnoBuffaloPixar has been shifting its slate of movies for the next couple years but its roadmap is becoming clearer. Toy Story 4 and Incredibles 2 swapped dates a few weeks ago, Cars 3 got a new, darker trailer, and now we know more details about its Day of the Dead project, Coco.
The Mexican-inspired film was announced in 2012, but few details other than the synopsis have been revealed until now.
Coco will follow the story of Miguel, a 12-year old who has musical ambitions but is deterred by his family. The plot will delve deeper into the reasons why his family frowns upon music, which dates back to his great-great-grandmother Imelda, and the journey he takes to change their minds in the Land of the Dead. The movie will take place during the Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, festival in Mexico.
The movie will have an all-Latino cast, including Benjamin Bratt and Gael García Bernal. Miguel will be voiced by relative unknown Anthony Gonzalez. Bratt will voice Miguel’s musical idol, Ernesto de la Cruz and Bernal will voice Hector, a skeletal-spirit Miguel befriends in the Land of the Dead.
“It was important to us from day one that we had an all-Latino cast,” said director Lee Unkrich in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Pixar is known for its attention to detail, and incorporating a Latino cast into the Mexican-based movie speaks to the studio’s desire to keep the film as authentic as possible.
Coco will be co-directed by Lee Unkrich, the director of Toy Story 3.
Coco will hit theaters November 22, 2017, so look for more details about the movie, including a possible teaser trailer, to be released in the coming months.
