“You know, I have one simple request. And that is to have bikes with freakin’ laser beams attached to their heads. Now evidently my cycloptic colleague informs me that that can be done.” Sorry, got caught up in Austin Powers for a minute there.

New York City’s Citi Bikes are set to get laser light additions this year, allowing riders to project a green image of a bicycle out in front of their bike.

The beam, sort of like the Batman signal but for bikes, should help drivers, pedestrians and other riders see that a bike is coming before it’s too late. In fact, one of the scariest things in New York City is to watch someone try to cross the street without noticing a biker is speeding down one of the city’s bike lane. This should help alleviate that problem.

250 bikes to start

“By incorporating Blaze’s lights into the bike, we aim to keep New Yorkers on foot, behind the wheel and riding a Citi Bike safer and to improve the rider experience overall so that people of all backgrounds are inspired to try New York City’s popular bike share program,” President and CEO of Motivate Jay Walder said.

According to the New York Post, Citi Bike will equip about 250 bikes by the middle of March but will need additional funding to add the feature to every City Bike.
