Netflix feature gives you another reason to love expandable storage

Until now, watching Netflix content offline has been a balancing act. If your phone has limited storage, taking shows and movies offline can fill it up pretty fast. If you wanted to save stuff to a microSD card, it was a pretty cumbersome process.

Luckily, Netflix has introduced a new feature that significantly simplifies the process of saving to microSD cards, making your phone’s puny storage a non-issue.

Going forward, Netflix’s “Download Location” feature gives users a choice of saving content to their phone’s onboard or expandable storage; if you have a phone with 32GB or less, picking the external option is a no-brainer. It’s pretty easy to fill up 32GB of storage but a lot harder when you’re working with a 128GB microSD card.

When Netflix introduced offline downloads at the end of last year, saving content to a microSD card, while possible, was a complicated process, something users found limiting. (If you’re an iOS user, you don’t even have that option, which sucks especially if your iPhone only has 16GB of storage.)

For a limited time

Netflix notes that SD card support is only available on select devices, but the service doesn’t provide a list of what’s supported. If we track that down we’ll be sure to update this post.

Also worth noting, whenever you store Netflix content offline, you’re beholden to a time limit, so you can’t store movies and TV shows on a microSD card forever. Still, the change is a welcome one and gives us another reason to love devices with expandable storage.
