We’ve come to expect references, hints, and Easter eggs in high profile Marvel films, and the latest Easter egg spotted in the recent Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer is next level.
About one minute into the trailer, Tony Stark is seen telling Peter Parker not to get involved with Vulture.
“Forget the flying monster,” Stark says. It’s this exchange where the Easter egg is placed.
Did you spot it? And, no, it’s not Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) standing in the background.
As pointed out on Twitter, Peter’s shirt is the same one worn by Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) in Iron Man 3. How in the hell did someone figure that out?
So, now that Pepper Potts has essentially been expunged from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is Tony Stark giving her stuff to Peter? We’re dying to know the context behind how Peter came into possession of that shirt, and whether or not it’s the same one (or if it’s just the director being clever).
RIP Pepper Potts
We haven’t seen Pepper Potts in the MCU since Iron Man 3, and since then there have only been passing references to her whereabouts. (Marvel has done the same thing with Jane Foster, who was played by Natalie Portman.) I suppose holding on to that shirt was Tony’s way of keeping the memory of Pepper around.
Or, it’s just some shirt and this is all a major coincidence. But, as we’ve learned with past Marvel movies, small details are there for a reason. I can’t wait to see what other Easter eggs are discovered once Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters in July.
