There has been a lot of debate about whether or not Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be Carrie Fisher’s last appearance as Princess Leia. Early reports suggested she might make an appearance in Episode IX, but Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy finally nipped the rumor in the bud by definitively stating The Last Jedi will be Carrie Fisher’s last Star Wars movie.

In an interview with Good Morning America, Kennedy shot down rumors being circulated—including from Carrie Fisher’s brother, Todd Fisher—that she would be featured in Episode IX, which is set to be directed by Colin Trevorrow.

Before Carrie Fisher’s untimely death in December, she had already completed filming for The Last Jedi. She even made an appearance in the first trailer for the movie. But after Fisher’s passing, Kennedy and director Colin Trevorrow regrouped and rewrote Episode IX’s script without Princess Leia.

How Princess Leia’s presence is handled in The Last Jedi is unknown

At this point, it is unknown how Princess Leia’s character will be handled in The Last Jedi. Kennedy didn’t mention any details other than she will be featured prominently in the movie. Might there be a special send off for the iconic character? We won’t know until Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theatres in December.

For the time being, you can check out this immensely touching tribute to Carrie Fisher that aired during the Star Wars Celebration last week. It’s something any fans of the actress should appreciate.
