One of my favorite ways to spend afternoons after school growing up, aside from playing Nintendo, was watching Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? on PBS. I still love geography. I spent way too long dinking around with BuzzFeed’s “Name 50 Countries” game last week, and I can attribute that I even care for Broderbund’s master thief – both the games that starred her and the television shows that followed.
Now, media giant Netflix is looking to revive Ms. Sandiego, and has ordered 20 episodes of a new animated series, according to The Tracking Board.
The thief herself is set to be played by the star of the CW hit series Jane the Virgin, Gina Rodriguez. The show is reportedly planned to continue the focus on education and will be “as educational as it is entertaining,” according to TTB.

Between a new Carmen Sandiego show and Bill Nye Saves the World, which airs April 21, Netflix seems to be pushing for more educational content. There are plenty of documentaries, but they’re not so directly focused on imparting knowledge as shows like these. Both shows were among my favorites growing up, and they’re just the start of a list of great educational shows Netflix could pick up.
Carmen Sandiego doesn’t yet have a release date, but we can assume at this point late 2017 at the earliest. No word yet on whether Rockapella will do the theme song.
