Sprint customers won’t just enjoy a fancy new Harman Kardon HTC One (M8). At its New York event on Tuesday, the carrier made a joint announcement with Spotify offering Framily (groan) plan members six months of free Spotify Premium beginning May 9. That deal is for new customers—existing Framily plan customers will get three free months. This is a nice little response to AT&T’s equally as nice Beats Music promotion.
Here’s how it’ll work: Framily Plan members will have straight access to Spotify’s humongous library of music, free of charge and with unlimited streaming. After your six month trial is up, plans with up to five people can get Spotify for $8/month; that deal will last two years. The current monthly cost for non-Framily plan subscribers is $9.99/month, so you’ll be enjoying a bit of a discount. The extra Spotify cost will just be tacked right onto your monthly Sprint bill.
Streaming music has become an important part of the mobile market, and services have been scheming new ways to reach consumers. Spotify is one of the most well-known names in the industry, and offering such a killer deal will almost certainly cause a spike in usage. The real hurdle, however, will be turning freeloading Spotify users into paying customers one their trial is up.
Beats Music apparently had a difficult time with that very same issue, so we’ll find out later this year just how effective Sprint’s partnership will be.
