After months of speculation, the cast of Disney’s Star Wars reboot has been revealed. Many familiar faces are returning to the franchise, including Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker. Now it makes even more sense why Episode VII, which is being helmed by J.J. Abrams, is being set 30 years after Return of the Jedi. Earlier this week Lucasfilm announced the Expanded Universe is non-canon.
Also joining the cast will be John Boyega (Attack the Block), Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver (Girls). Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis), Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings), Domhnall Gleeson (About Time) and Max von Sydow (Shutter Island). Many of these actors had already been rumored for crucial parts in the new Star Wars universe, but there are some surprises. Serkis, for example, is known and respected for his mo-cap roles, though it’s unclear how he’ll factor into Episode VII.
Early rumors suggested Adam Driver would play the movie’s titular villain, though no specific roles have been announced just yet; details on plot are also light. Now that we know Harrison Ford will make an appearance in the new film, it appears those rumors suggestion Han Solo would play a major role in the Episode VII weren’t all that far off.
Regarding the original cast: the original announcement of Episode VII was allegedly going to focus solely on a new set of characters, with no major roles for Luke, Han and Leia. But that was apparently vetoed, which is why Abrams is now at the helm, who is also helping write the script. Episode VII is scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2015.
