Answer: His films use a lot of cinematic sweeping shots, explosions and over-dramatic yelling to compensate for his lack of talent. Question: Who is Michael Bay?
In a new Transformers: Age of Extinction trailer, we get over two minutes of mostly new footage of the upcoming film, showing off the new cast of both robots and humans. And, yes, there is a lot—A LOT—of slow motion. That slow motion explosion shot—a signature of Michael Bay—at the two minute mark is UTTERLY RIDICULOUS. Sorry, I got a little carried away there.
“This is not war,” warns Optimus Prime. “It’s human extinction.”
Just when you think the absurdity level couldn’t be pushed any further, there’s a shot of what looks like a rally car “kicking” a human in the face with its tire. The stock human character flings his head back—maybe in embarrassment—as spit visibly spews from his mouth. The whole trailer is like one big Michael Bay fantasy—it’s not hard to imagine him shouting in complete ecstasy, a maniacal look on his face as he watches his work further terrorize Transformers fans.
But, I must admit, the entire thing is redeemed in the trailer’s final fifteen seconds. “We need a new army,” Optimus Prime says. And then we get a terrific look at Grimlock, leader of a small sub-faction of the Autobots, who looks incredibly powerful and just as we imagined him to be on the big screen. Despite my snark about Michael Bay, I’m actually a fan (loose term) of his movies, and take them for what they are: mind-numbing entertainment, and I stress the part about mind-numbing.
Transformers: Age of Extinction stars Mark Wahlberg, and is scheduled to hit theaters on June 27.
