Amazon’s three-year deal with HBO is a pretty big deal for cord-cutters, and shows that maybe the future of TV will indeed be entirely streaming. Today, the first HBO shows will begin populating Amazon’s Prime service, giving customers access to some of the best content that’s ever aired on television. If you haven’t seen any of these shows—like, maybe you never paid for HBO—today is a really special day. Personally, I’m looking forward to checking out Deadwood, and I never did finished watching The Pacific.
Below is some of the content hitting Prime today, according to Amazon.
- All seasons of Deadwood, The Sopranos, The Wire, Rome, Six Feet Under, Eastbound & Down, Enlightened and Flight of the Conchords
- Select seasons of True Blood, Boardwalk Empire and Treme
- Miniseries, including Band of Brothers, The Pacific, John Adams, Parade’s End and Angels in America
- Original movies, comedy specials and documentaries
As part of the licensing agreement, HBO will continue to add more shows in the ensuing three years, giving customers access to new seasons of existing shows, such as Girls, The Newsroom and Veep. I’m hoping Bored to Death, which went three seasons before getting canned, will eventually be added to the Prime lineup, too. (Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, if you’re listening, please bring that show back).
Amazon also reminded folks that HBO Go will be added to the Fire TV later this year, so those of you currently subscribed to the premium cable channel will be able to watch the entire HBO lineup soon. We’ve said it once, and we’ll say it again: Prime is one of the best deals out there, and the added bonus of HBO content makes that small annual price increase much easier to stomach.
