Following the incredible commercial and critical success of Godzilla, director Gareth Edwards has been tapped to take on an even bigger project—and we don’t mean a Godzilla sequel, though that’s definitely coming down the pipeline (along with a third film). Edwards’s involvement with the project was confirmed on the official Star Wars site on Thursday, along with the appointment of screenwriter Gary Whitta. The film has already been scheduled for a Dec. 16, 2016 release.
Disney has plans to release a new Star Wars film every year until 2020, with the bigger films – Episode VII, VIII and IX – broken up by the spinoffs. There have been rumors Disney has plans to release spinoff films surrounding popular characters such as Boba Fett, Yoda and a younger Han Solo, though nothing has been confirmed. A recent leak claimed the Boba Fett spinoff would be the first one to hit theaters, so perhaps Edwards is on deck for that.
Edwards’ involvement in the Star Wars movie isn’t expected to affect his duties with the Godzilla sequel, which was recently announced following the incredible success of the Godzilla reboot. That film doesn’t even have a script yet, so it’s probably a ways off. Other possible Star Wars spinoff films, one simply called Solo and another called Red Five, are expected to hit theaters in 2018 and 2020.
Episode VII , which has already begun filming and is being directed by J.J. Abrams, is scheduled for a Dec. 18, 2015 release.
