Director Seth Gordon has stated that filming of the Uncharted movie will being in early 2015. At least, “that’s the plan.” Speaking with Zap2It, Gordon spoke about the films’ production schedule and who he has in mind to play the lovable mass murderer, Nathan Drake.
“I think very early next year. That’s the plan. That’s like tomorrow, essentially, because the prep is so complicated for the movie.”
In regards to Nathan Drake, Gordon says the search is still ongoing to find the right person. Finding someone who can act is important, but so is the person’s perfectly chiseled jawbone.
“I want it to be a great actor. That’s number one, and then if it’s someone who has an actual jaw, that’s even better. The game is so well done that you need it to live up to that. There’s no way we’d do the inverse of that where it’s somebody famous who can’t [act].”
Here we have a perfect example of the difficultly of adapting video games into movies nowadays. You have an iconic character with a real human face, and casting directors have to match that design for your movie. Finding a Hollywood star that can both act and look like the character severely cuts down on the pool of options. It’s much harder than taking a low resolution sprite and filling in the gaps with your own imagination as to who can play him.
As video games become more corporatized and business suits begin thinking about films and other ways to expand the franchise into other mediums, how long until we start to hire recognizable actors first and model the characters after? The search for an actor will be much easier then, and the celebrity will bring all kinds of attention to the game as well as the inevitable movie, comics, and lunch boxes.
We still have to see if the next wave of video game films pans out though. We still have yet to see one pull in the financial and critical reception to show that this trend is going to pick up again.
I’m at least glad that the film has a gaming enthusiast of a director tied to it. Seth Gordon is most famous for his groundbreaking documentary King of Kong: A Fistfull of Quarters.
