Ian Rogers, the head of Beats’ $10-a-month subscription music service, will allegedly be in charge of Apple’s music streaming future, The Wall Street Journal said. Neither Beats Music nor iTunes Radio has attracted an extraordinary following, but with the Beats acquisition finally wrapped up, it sounds like the pieces are being put into place to change that. For starters, it sounds like Rogers is going to focus on creating a cohesion between the two different platforms.

With iTunes at its disposal, Apple already has an incredibly popular and enormous music catalog at its disposal. If Rogers can find a way to leverage that, and appeal to Apple (and other) users, Beats Music and iTunes Radio could shape into some big competitors. Right now, you pretty much have Spotify and Pandora, and that’s about it—but Apple wants that to change.

Apple says the Beats acquisition is all about getting in touch with its music roots, which really helped put the company on the map with iTunes and the iPod.

“Music has always held a special place in our hearts, and we’re thrilled to join forces with a group of people who love it as much as we do,” Apple said on its site. “We’re delighted to be working with the team to elevate that experience even further.”

It’s going to take plenty of work to take on the bigger streaming giants, but with two pretty enormous services under its belt, Apple can now focus on further pushing those services into the upper echelon. One would imagine Apple will use Beats as a huge marketing tool in the coming months, which is the perfect opportunity to also mention its music services. When you consider new iPhones are just around the corner, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Beats Music and iTunes Radio more in the conversation come this time next year.
