Imagine if, one day years from now, Spider-Man showed up in an Avengers movie. The way things are setup now—Sony owns the rights to Spider-Man, while Marvel Studios owns the characters that appear in Avengers—that’s unlikely to happen anytime soon. But, there are apparently some murmurs within both studios about a possible crossover plan that could see Spider-Man become a fixture of Marvel Studios’ larger cinematic plan, which includes multiple standalone films, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Avengers and more.
HitFix seems to think something could happen, but doesn’t seem too convinced something will.
“I’m hearing that there are some very cool “Spider-Man” plans being discussed that would help Sony refocus their enormously important franchise while also opening up some connections in the onscreen Marvel movie universe that would blow fandom’s minds,” HitFix wrote. What seems clear from what I’ve heard is that Marvel wants to be able to play with all of their characters, and if they can make that work creatively and on a corporate level, they will, and that means the world gets bigger again.”
As Uproxx points out, the logistics behind such a move seems almost impossible, especially given the maze-like corporate politics. And, to be fair, the possibility might only exist in the minds of Spider-Man’s biggest fans, who might think he’s not getting the treatment he deserves over in the Sony camp. If Spider-Man does ever join up with another Marvel character, I wouldn’t expect it to be anytime in the near future though, given the enormous success Marvel Studios has had, maybe Sony is ready to open up discussions.
