Peter Jackson has spent his time wandering Middle-earth for over a decade, but his journey will finally come to a close when The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies hits theaters this December. After seeing a brief teaser earlier this summer, the final trailer in The Hobbit trilogy has been released, and it displays a noticeably darker mood compared to the first two films. Thorin has taken back his crown at the Lonely Mountain, but at what cost? That’s what the Five Armies will address. Judging from the trailer, Thorin seems willing to do whatever it takes to defend the mountain’s riches.
The film will feature no shortage of conflicts; we see elves against dwarfs, orcs versus elves, the return of Sauron, and an angry Gandalf. Now it’s just a matter of Jackson piecing the content into a cohesive film. The first two Hobbit movies were fantastic, and built up to this very moment. There will be a lot of fighting, and a lot of arguments over what’s right and what isn’t. Is massive wealth worth the death of many?
Five Armies will be the culmination of years and years of work, so let’s hope the payoff is worth it. Jackson’s Hobbit films haven’t quite reached the heights of his Lord of the Rings trilogy, but the new trailer suggests the director is back to form. If you like dark and moody, Five Armies looks like it’ll be the perfect film this winter. The film will hit theaters on Dec. 12 in the U.K., and Dec. 17 in the U.S.
