It’s been four years since we last saw Woody and Buzz escape the confines of Sunnyside Daycare, and the famous duo will be back in action soon. Disney CEO Bob Iger on Thursday announced Pixar will release Toy Story 4 in June 2017—ok, so it’s not soon, though Disney (and Pixar) has plenty on its plate in the coming months and year. In addition to Pixar’s Inside Out next year, Disney will also have its hand in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Ant-Man.
Variety reports John Lasseter will helm the new project, which will likely feature the familiar cast of characters (Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, Mr. Potato Head, etc.) No word on whether or not the original cast will return, but the movie just wouldn’t be the same without them, so we imagine it’s only a matter of time before there’s confirmation. I mean, Rex just wouldn’t be Rex without the voice of Wallace Shawn.
Very few details were revealed, only to say that Lasseter will take over directing duty; Lasseter previously directed the original Toy Story, Cars, Cars 2 and he’s also attached to a third Cars movie. In addition to Inside Out, Pixar is working on The Good Dinosaur, which is set to come out at the end of 2015, and Finding Dory, a sequel to Finding Nemo, set to hit in 2016. A sequel to The Incredibles is also planned, though not much information is known about that project.
Toy Story is what put Pixar on the map, and is one of the most beloved animated series out there; it’s great to see Pixar still showing love to one of its funniest and heartfelt franchises out there.
In December, a 22-minute holiday special will air called Toy Story That Time Forgot, and will feature most of the regular cast. I suppose that can tide us over until 2017.
