See full gallery on TechnoBuffaloMicrosoft’s new plans for a music streaming and storage service are finally coming together, and the company’s strategy may hinge on a marriage between its OneDrive cloud storage and Xbox Music. Clues have been popping up inside both services, but a new leak from Windows Central seems to confirm the rumors.
The new service will allegedly be called Xbox Music Locker, and will let you upload your music to OneDrive and then access it from the Xbox-branded app. According to one anonymous insider, Microsoft already has a page on its OneDrive website where you can create a Music folder, though we weren’t able to find it ourselves. The source also dug up graphics showing how the new service might look, which you can see in the slideshow above.
The same leaker even offers up a list of countries that will be supported at launch, including Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. It looks like Asia, Africa and Russia will all be left out, at least in the short term.
Xbox Music Locker will apparently be free to use, and Microsoft may even offer up an extra 20GB of OneDrive storage for anyone who uploads their music. There’s no word on when the new service will launch, but with Xbox Music’s free ad-supported streaming set to shut down next month, it makes sense that Microsoft would offer an alternative around the same time.
