Star Trek 3 will hit theaters on July 8, 2016. Paramount Pictures on Tuesday announced the good news, and comes a day after Justin Lin, famous for helming films in the Fast & Furious franchise, was tapped to direct the third movie. The most recent Star Trek film, Into Darkness, came out last year, and was directed by J.J. Abrams, who has since moved on to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which comes out next year. Very few details have been revealed about the third film in the Star Trek reboot, though I imagine the same cast will return to reprise their roles.
The next several years will see the release of hotly anticipated sci-fi and comic movies, including Phase 3 of Marvel’s movie domination, along with a bevy of films coming from the DC Comics side. There are many, many others as well, so geek culture fans will have plenty to see and do. As for Star Trek 3, there will certainly be pressure to continue on with the success the first two movies enjoyed, especially with a new director at the mantle.
Fittingly, the launch of Star Trek 3 will be during the same year the beloved franchise will celebrate its 50th anniversary, which first dazzled TV audiences way back in 1966.
