We’ve got some good news and some even better news for any sci-fi fans out there. Not only is a Blade Runner sequel officially in the works, but according to Variety, Harrison Ford will return to his iconic role as Android-hunter Rick Deckard.
Back in Dec., Ford responded positively an early script, calling it the “best thing” he’d ever read, so it’s no huge surprise that he’ll be in the film. We still don’t know anything about the plot, though it could follow the trajectory of Philip K. Dick’s original books. Then again, Blade Runner didn’t exactly stick to the plot of Do Android’s Dream of Electric Sheep, so it’s possible this sequel could take things in an entirely new direction.
Ridley Scott, who directed the original, is returning as a producer, while Denis Villeneuve, the Canadian director behind Prisoners, is reportedly set to helm the new film. The movie has been in development since 2011, and Scott recently promised that it won’t just be another Hollywood cash grab.
“I’m not just doing a sequel with lots of action and see how far we can go with the special effects because you can’t really,” he said late last year. “Blade Runner kind of landed on a somehow very credible future. And it’s very difficult to change that because it’s been so influential with everything else.”
Based on Ridley Scott’s promise and the return of Harrison Ford, it sounds like the new movie could actually live up to the original classic. Hopefully we’ll learn more about the actual plot before too long.
