Official trailer for ‘Ex Machina’ is uncomfortably tense

The haunting first trailer for Ex Machina has been released, and it’s a lot more sinister than the teaser led us to believe. Just watch it, and you’ll see what I mean. What is presented as a harmless study suddenly turns into a frightening experiment, with tensions boiling over as the intentions of the characters become more nebulous.

It leaves you feeling uncomfortable, unsure—I get the chills just thinking about it. That’s exactly what director Alex Garland, who is previously known for writing 28 Days Later, is going for.

The film explores the relationship between man and machine, and the blurred lines between sentient beings and advanced artificial intelligence. From the trailer it’s obvious that Ava is the A.I.—her appearance gives it away. But her intelligence, demeanor and emotions throw our preconceptions out the window, and we immediately begin to empathize with what we’re told is merely a robot.

It’s clear that Nathan, Ava’s creator, is hiding something, but what? And can we trust a word he, or Ava, says? We’ll find out when the film lands in the U.S. on April 10.
