Before you go and hit play on the clip above, I’d suggest you think about what you’re really about to do. Yes, you’ll be pleased and delighted by the awesome new footage Marvel is presenting. But you’ll also be spoiling what will likely be one of the best fight scenes in Age of Ultron. Me? I pressed play without thinking twice, and I’m glad I did. However, if you want to go in mostly fresh, I’d refrain. Don’t do it.
It’s not like you don’t have that much longer to wait: Age of Ultron is coming out on May 1 in the U.S., so if you’ve held out this long, why start now? In any case, below I’ll start describing what we see in the clip, so beware of minor spoilers below.
We’ve known for a long time that Hulk would go up against Tony Stark’s Hulkbuster; it was one of the biggest reveals in the first Age of Ultron trailer from last year. But up until now, we didn’t really know why the two were fighting. Was it something Stark said? Is the Hulk just on a rampage because someone ate his lunch? It’s actually neither of those things.
If you paid close attention to the trailers from earlier this year, you would have noticed that Hulk’s eyes had a kind of red hue to them, suggesting he may have been manipulated by some outside influence. And, wouldn’t you know it: According to Stark, it was Scarlet Witch who messed with Hulk’s mind—something the new character might also do to Black Widow as well.
“That little witch is messing with your mind,” Stark tells an enraged Hulk. “You’re stronger than her, smarter than her. You’re Bruce Banner.”
Stark doesn’t outright namedrop Scarlet Witch, but it’s not hard to put two and two together. If she is indeed responsible for putting bad thoughts into Hulk’s mind, it certainly makes Scarlet Witch one of the more dangerous characters in the movie. Not only can she manipulate energy, but she has the potential to really tear the group apart.
Aside from the drama between the characters, the clip is just awesome without any context. Hulk can really lay a beatdown, but the Hulkbuster armor is capable of hanging in there; it’s not quite as agile as Stark’s other suits, but it’s obviously very powerful—and how cool is it that Hulkbuster’s armor can re-assemble like new when it gets damaged?
“In the back? Dick move Banner.”
