Some important news has come out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe today. As Avengers: Age of Ultron continues its rollout across the globe, attention is quickly being turned toward the next adventure of Captain America, which will see him face off against Tony Stark himself. While neither is really considered an “antagonist” in the upcoming Civil War film, a few key baddies have been announced.
The first is Baron Helmut Zemo, who will be portrayed by Daniel Brühl (Inglourious Basterds), which the actor recently confirmed to The Independent. There had already been plenty of speculation Brühl would join the MCU, and now we can put those rumors to bed. Speaking to The Independent, Brühl seemed to beam with excitement, calling Civil War a “huge project.”
The son of Baron Heinrich Zemo, Baron Helmut Zemo was introduced back in the 1970s, when he was involved in an accident with his father’s chemical Adhesive X. Helmut eventually linked up with Arnim Zola and Batroc, both of whom appeared briefly in the second Captain America movie. After a number of evil affiliations, Helmut eventually formed a group known as the Thunderbolts (sounds like an 80s rock group), which fought against evil.
In addition to Brühl, Frank Grillo, who played Brock Rumlow (Crossbones) in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, confirmed that he’ll be returning to Civil War. Other major characters appearing in the movie include Iron Man, The Falcon, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, Black Panther and Spider-Man.
The Russo brothers, who directed the previous Captain America film, are again in charge of Captain America’s fate when it hits theaters on June 6, 2016; the two will then transition over to Avengers: Infinity War.
