Head-Cha-La, my friends! The recent Dragon Ball Z movies have proven to be box office gold in Japan. The remixed Kai episodes did pretty well and were praised for addressing the pacing issues of Dragon Ball Z. And wouldn’t you know it? The generation of kids who watched this legendary anime on TV are all grown up and having little Super Saiyans of their own now.

What, did you think the timing of this comeback was coincidental? Moms and Dads still want to feel nostalgic watching Dragon Ball, and now they have kids to give them a legitimate an excuse.

What else is there to do now besides bring the anime back? What’s that? They are doing it!? Indeed, Yahoo Japan and Famitsu have confirmed that Dragon Ball Chou (Super in English) will be airing on Japanese airwaves very soon, and even better, creator Akira Toriyama is on board!

The last time an original Dragon Ball story aired on television was from 1996-1997 with the widely dreaded Dragon Ball GT. Fans don’t really consider it strict canon though, because Toriyama was not involved with the project. Apparently, neither does Toei Animation or Toriyama himself. The new show will pick up where the Buu Saga left off, with the Earth at peace, like GT never happened.

Goku’s voice actress Masako Nozawa is back on board as well. I still have trouble seeing a 78-year-old woman playing as the voice of Goku, but more power to her if she can.

Dragon Ball Chou will begin airing in July on Fuji TV Sunday mornings at 9AM. Fuji TV Producer Osamu Noazki claims

“As I read the plot [of the series] I’ve already received from Akira Toriyama, my dreams for this begin to expand. An enemy even stronger than Buu or Freeza may appear…”

Some things never change, huh Dragon Ball? Yet another more powerful bad guy… Be sure to check out our favorite moments in Dragon Ball’s long and fabled history. I wonder if we’ll be adding any new favorite moments or meeting new friendly faces in the coming year.
