It appears that Hollywood has suddenly discovered the 1980s and now everything needs to be turned into a movie. Especially if it was a toy line from Hasbro.
After the success of the Transformers and G.I. Joe movie franchises, Hasbro has been shopping around its portfolio of properties and landed G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon Chu to take on Jem and the Holograms.
Yes… that Jem and Holograms.
The speed with which this movie came together almost felt like a practical joke, but now, here we are with a full trailer and a release date set for this fall. Somehow this is an actual movie that will be in theaters just months from now. And reportedly it only cost $5 million to make, so depending on how much money is spent on marketing, it is almost assured of being profitable.
What is odd in the trailer, however, is there appears to be no references to the “evil” all girl band The Misfits. Instead this looks almost like the exact same plot as the Josie and the Pussycats film from 2001. Yet another live action film based on a cartoon about an all girl band. Apparently all films on this topic share the same script?
As someone entering his teen years in the early 1980s, I will admit some nostalgia for all of these properties, but also must say that some things are best left back in their original decade. Hopefully someone stops Hasbro before it gets to the Inhumanoids or Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light.
Jem and the Holograms will hit theaters on Oct. 23.
