True Detective season 2 is just over a month away, and we still don’t really know what to expect. The first trailer introduced us to four main characters without a line of dialogue. Now a second short trailer offers a quote from each of them, offering a few hints at what’s to come. Check out the clip above and then read on for a recap of what each character has to say.
“Sometimes your worst self is your best self,” says Vince Vaughn, who plays what seems like a pretty philosophical villain. Hopefully showrunner Nic Pizzolatto still lets him crack at least a few jokes.
“My strong suspicion is we get the world we deserve.” That’s Colin Farrell as a detective giving off some serious Matthew McConaughey/Rusty Cohle vibes from True Detective’s first season.
“This isn’t me doing this, this isn’t me,” says Taylor Kitsch, playing what seems like a pretty conflicted motorcycle cop.
Finally, Rachel McAdams’s detective offers a few possible plot details while practicing some pretty lethal moves with a large knife. “This girl’s gone missing, nobody cares. The interior’s poisoned and suddenly worth billions, nobody cares,” she says.
It’s all very interesting, though we still have no idea what’s happening and we don’t expect a simple explanation anytime soon. True Detective’s complex and confusing storytelling was part of what made the show’s first season so great, and we have a feeling season 2 will be just a intricate. The first episode premieres June 21 on HBO.
