I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but Pixels actually looks like a decent Adam Sandler movie. Given his body of work, it’s not hard to outdo That’s My Boy and Jack and Jill, but I digress. Pixels, based on an acclaimed short film, might offer the right mix of nostalgia and humor. But I stress might, because this is a Sandler movie we’re talking about.
The saving grace of Pixels might be the film’s visuals, which turn the city of New York into an 8-bit wonderland. The plot is completely absurd, and it’s even more unbelievable that the government would entrust the fate of humanity to four video game fanatics. But suspension of disbelief, right? Right.
When aliens misinterpret video feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war, they attack the Earth in the form of the video games.
Too bad the aliens didn’t get a chance to see some of the gaming industry’s more esteemed titles, like Hotel Mario, or Superman, or Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing. Then maybe all this fighting might not have happened in the first place.
