If you haven’t heard by now, Dragon Ball is returning to Japanese airwaves for its first anime series in over eighteen years! Dragon Ball Chou, translated as Dragon Ball Super, is set to premier next month on Fuji TV in Japan, and TV Spots are now starting to pour in.
This 14 second trailer was captured from Japanese television and subtitled by YouTube channel Dragon Ball Z ᴴᴰ. It provides an early look at all of our favorite returning characters like Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Trunks, Goten, Piccolo, Buu, Mr. Satan, and even Beerus, whom I guess they are squeezing into the canon after Battle of Gods proved to be such a popular movie.
Many are excited, but I’m not sure how I feel about a new show. Anime these days has a bit too much of a clean and shiny look to it for my taste. It’s easier on the eyes, but this spotless style drains shows of their grit. I like the imperfections of older hand drawn anime, especially in Dragon Ball and early Dragon Ball Z episodes. The gallery below compares Piccolo from the earlier days to the show to his more recent incarnations, and that should give you a decent idea of what I mean.
Older Piccolo all the way!
Comparisons between the original Neon Genesis Evangelion, which still looks amazing, and the cleaner-cut newer movies of today also come to mind.
On the other hand, more adventures with Goku sound pretty fun, especially since the generation of kids who grew up watching Dragon Ball are having kids of their own now. Not that you need an excuse to roll out the old DVD collection, but it’s always fun to watch a classic favorite with a new pair of eyes at your side.
Either way, there’s no stopping it now and nothing else to do but bite my lip and hope for the best. I don’t think they’ll let us down.
