Channing Tatum’s Gambit project finally has a director, according to an Entertainment Weekly report. Rupert Wyatt, who directed Rise of the Planet of the Apes, has been given the reins, tasked with convincing us that an actor who has been in two movies about stripping can be a bona fide superhero. A lofty task indeed.
We already know that Channing Tatum has immense star power, but a solo movie about one of the coolest Marvel characters ever? I’m not so sure. That to me is like seeing Ashton Kutcher play Steve Jobs. We’ve already seen Gambit show up in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, played by the excellent Taylor Kitsch, but for some reason that’s been his only outing so far.
In addition to Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Wyatt also directed 2014’s The Gambler, which was decent, if not for the fact that it had Mark Wahlberg playing himself. So a decent director in charge of one of the most beloved comic book characters, who just so happens to be played by an actor who is probably best suited for 21 Jump Street-type roles. No way this could go wrong, right?
Gambit is scheduled to hit theaters on Oct. 7, 2016.
