Fresh off the launch of Apple Music, a new report claims Facebook may be getting into the streaming market as well. The social network has been meeting with major music labels, according to The Verge, though the specifics are still up in the air.

Facebook has already held early discussions with Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group. The Verge couldn’t actually confirm that the focus of these meetings was music streaming, but says that’s the “popular assumption.”

It’s also unclear exactly what a Facebook-based streaming service might look like. It could be an entirely new app or maybe something tied to the company’s popular video platform. Either way, the social network apparently wants to offer a “unique” experience. That’s going to be tough in an already crowded market.

Facebook has dipped its toes into the music arena before. The company helped Spotify launch in the U.S. back in 2011. It also introduced a Listen button for musician’s official pages, along with a “Listen with friends” feature that integrated with a handful of streaming services.

Facebook will need to differentiate to grab a substantial piece of the market. If a service is indeed in the works, we hope it’s unique and not just another copycat service that ultimately fails to gain much momentum.
