The proton pack not doing it for you? How about the new jumpsuits? Ghostbusters director Paul Feig has been offering sneak peaks from the film’s set over the past few weeks, and he revealed one of the most iconic props this week: the Ecto-1, which was what the ghost-hunting crew drove in the original movie.
When Ghostbusters came out in 1984, the Ecto-1 was a vintage Cadillac, a mammoth vehicle that looked more like a boat on wheels. The newest Ecto-1 looks more like a hearse, a fitting metaphor for the Ghostbusters universe. And it looks awesome, like something that was thrown together in a mad scientist’s garage, and not cobbled together by a prop team for a movie.
The Ecto-1 is one of the more famous movie vehicles ever, in the company of the DeLorean, the 1968 Mustang from Bullit, and The General Lee. Ghostbusters fans might feel a little aggrieved that the design has changed, but I’m actually glad Feig is updating some of the movie’s most famous props. The soul of the originals are still intact, and that’s all that matters.
At least the logo hasn’t changed. You can see the other props Feig has revealed in the gallery above, along with the original Ecto-1.
