What we didn’t know was why, but a new report from Hollywood Reporter claims after an early cut of Rogue One was screened in-house, Disney executives felt the tone was “off” and wanted to lighten the mood to more closely match the 1977 original.
“The goal of the reshoots will be to lighten the mood, bring some levity into the story and restore a sense of fun to the adventure,” Hollywood Reporter said.
Disney executives reportedly want to get the tone right because Rogue One leads up to “10 minutes before [A New Hope] begins.”
“You have to match the tone!” Hollywood Reporter’s source said.
The first cut director Gareth Edwards showed to executives was allegedly “solid,” but still didn’t quite measure up to Disney’s standards. One source described the cut shown to executives as having the feel of a war movie, Hollywood Reporter said, which is how we’ve heard the film described before.
While it sounds like these reshoots are necessary to shift Rogue One’s tone, it doesn’t sound like Disney is quite in “crisis” mode like a previous report said. To many people, the word “reshoot” sounds dirty, but it’s important when making a movie because it allows filmmakers to shift pieces around, add elements, and ultimately make a better version; in writing, rewriting is just as important as the initial draft.
In the case of Rogue One, Disney’s standards are particularly high because the film will be the first of a series of spinoff movies coming over the next several years. You only get one chance to make a good first impression.
