There have been numerous films about NASA’s early years, the space race, and the wonders of space, but none have dared to explore the story of Hidden Figures, about a trio of African-American women whose work led to John Glenn becoming the first American astronaut to make a complete orbit around Earth.
Hidden Figures, directed by Theodore Melfi, will focus on Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer), and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae), three scientists who contribute to some major breakthroughs at NASA. Meanwhile, they struggle for acceptance from their peers, who don’t appear too welcoming to women, let alone women who are African-American.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Hidden Figures is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)—brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.
It looks like an inspiring tale about three incredibly smart individuals who make a lasting impact on NASA’s space program. Look for Hidden Figures to drop on Jan. 13, 2017.
