In a move many anticipated with today’s announcement of the Pixel phones, the end of the Nexus line has been confirmed.

Google will continue supporting older devices like the 6P and 5X, but future Nexus-branded devices will not be manufactured. This means Google is abandoning Nexus phones that have been around since 2010 with the introduction of the Nexus One.

The Nexus was always seen as a niche product and mostly appealed to hardcore Android enthusiasts and also provided a reference device to developers for what an Android device should be. It was never heavily marketed and rarely reached the confines of carrier stores, thus making their availability limited to casual consumers.

Google’s attempt to create a simplified Android experience had its ups and downs. At its best, it served to cut the horrific trend of god-awful skins that bogged down phones, but at its worst, never managed to overcome its camera deficiencies.

The Pixel devices come with a renewed emphasis on camera quality, and with the Google Assistant, Google hopes to break out of ruts the Nexus line never overcame.

The Nexus line helped pushed Android forward in ways Samsung or HTC never quite managed to, even though those served as the flagship phones that helped turn Android into a juggernaut. It’s now the Pixels turn to carry Google’s phone legacy.

With that being said, the Nexus phones will always keep a special place our hearts.
