See full gallery on TechnoBuffaloGuardians of the Galaxy still hasn’t officially been released to the public—many early press reviews have hit—but it looks like a sequel is already being planned. And, even more good news, director James Gunn will reportedly return to helm the second film.
In an interview with TheWrap during Comic-Con this week, co-writer Nicole Perlman said that Gunn would indeed return for a sequel, so long as people want to see it. Judging from the early rave reviews—it currently has a 100-percent Fresh rating on RottenTomatoes—the likelihood of that seems pretty high. The marketing blitz around Guardians of the Galaxy this last month has been immense, but it looks to have paid off.
Perlman didn’t definitively say whether she would return to help Gunn with writing duties, but why mess with a winning formula? According to IGN, this is actually Perlman’s first produced screenplay; she apparently came up through the ranks of Marvel’s writers program, where screenwriters are given the opportunity to adapt the comics you love into a feature-length film, IGN said.
Marvel this year already had a strong showing with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but by all accounts Guardians of the Galaxy is even better. If the critical acclaim is matched by public interest, the film could grow into one of the biggest in Marvel’s stable. Not only is it a big space opera, but it features a handful of unique characters, so the opportunities beyond a few Hollywood films is endless.
Walking around Comic-Con this week, you got the feeling it was one of the more anticipated films to have a presence at the event. I would imagine a lot of Star-Lord costumes will be sold for Halloween this year. Guardians of the Galaxy is set to hit theaters on Aug. 1.
