Spider-Man: New details about Marvel’s reboot revealed

Ever since Marvel announced Spider-Man was part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the studio’s intentions were pretty clear: it wanted a younger, more teen-angsty superhero, one that deals with human problems on top of fighting baddies. And a new interview between Marvel chief, Kevin Feige, and Birth.Movies.Death, gives us an even better idea of what Spidey’s new adventure will be like: a John Hughes movie.

For all you millennials, John Hughes was a renowned director who had a number of hits in the 80s and 90s, including Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Home Alone. His ability to capture the teenage experience was second-to-none, and for that he’ll always be remembered as one of a kind. That’s what Marvel is hoping to capture.

“It’s the soap opera in high school, and those supporting characters, that are interesting,” Feige said. “Just as we hadn’t seen a heist movie in a long time, or a shrinking movie in a long time, we haven’t seen a John Hughes movie in a long time. Not that we can make a John Hughes movie—only John Hughes could—but we’re inspired by him, and merging that with the superhero genre in a way we haven’t done before excites us.”

Feige added that he hopes to explore the life of a teenager who just so happens to have super powers. What would someone like Ferris Bueller do if he was Spider-Man? The goal is to relate to younger generations in a way that other Marvel characters can’t. In many ways, Peter Parker is just a regular kid dealing with an extraordinary gift.

In addition to that, it sounds as though Feige wants to introduce Spider-Man villains we haven’t seen onscreen yet. It’s unclear who that might be, though I’m sure fans have their own personal favorites. We’ll find out as we edge closer to the movie’s July 28, 2017 release.
